Week CD: My Soul van Leela James
Het album My Soul van de Amerikaanse zangeres Leela James is de hele week (25) Radio 6 Week CD. Haar stem is zuivere soul, de muziek is eigentijds en heeft een ontspannen R&B feel.
Met My Soul laat Leela James horen welke weg ze is ingeslagen, namelijk die van de pure soul. Haar album is niet voor niets uitgebracht op het legendarische Stax Records. In het cdboekje waarin ze op de eerste pagina iedereen uitvoerig bedankt, schrijft ze dan ook ” Thank you Stax Records for giving me a new home, full of real soul [...] what a perfect combination 
”. De meeste liedjes zijn door haar zelf geschreven. Het nummer Mr. Incredible, Ms. Unforgetable zingt James samen met soulzanger Raheem Devaughn.

Fine PrintLeela James heeft al twee albums op haar naam staan: A Change Is Gonna Come (2005) naar de gelijknamige titelsong van Sam Cooke en Let’s Do It Again (2009) met voornamelijk covers. Op haar website is te lezen dat ze nu veel bewuster bezig is met haar muziek en imago. “After my first two records, I knew I had to find a way to have more control over what was happening with my career,” says James. “When I was younger, I was just excited to be making records, and I wasn’t aware of some of the fine print that’s a part of this business. I had to learn how to take charge of where my music was going, and how to get there.”

Haar geluid is puur en eigentijds, omdat ze haar lief en leed, haar soul op haar eigen manier wenst te brengen. “In the past, people tried to put me in a box, based on what they thought soul should sound like,” zegt ze op haar site. “But soul is whatever comes out of you when you bring your deepest and most honest emotions to the forefront. All these songs are a representation of my soul.” Ook op het podium is ze helemaal zichzelf. Ze heeft een sterke podium présence en heur haar lijkt wel evenzo weerbarstig. Bij een tv-show waar ze rustig op een barkruk zit, zoals je kunt zien in het filmpje hieronder, weet ze haar publiek toch even weer flink op te zwepen.
